What is a Reduced Port Ball Valve?
A reduced port ball valve — also called a standard port, standard bore, reduced bore or regular bore ball valve — is a ball valve where the internal bore is smaller than the internal diameter of the pipe it connects to. This differs from a full port (full bore) ball valve where the bore matches the pipe ID exactly with no flow restriction.
On a standard port valve the bore is exactly one pipe size smaller than the nominal pipe size — so a 1" standard port valve has a 3/4" bore, and a 1/2" standard port valve has a 3/8" bore. A reducing ball valve may have a bore more than one size smaller — though this is less common in standard industrial applications. The terms reduced port, standard port, reduced bore, standard bore and regular bore are all used interchangeably across the industry — all refer to a valve with a bore smaller than the pipe ID.
